Lucy is starting a three-week work placement in a small restaurant in York. She wants to learn new recipes. Before her first lunch service, the head chef, Ben, explains that working safely is also part of the job. “A busy kitchen needs people who work carefully, not people who rush,” he says.
First, Ben shows Lucy how to keep the work area clear. Bags and boxes must not block the space between the tables. Water or oil on the floor can make someone slip. If Lucy sees a spill, she must tell a colleague straight away. The team must clean it up and warn other people until the floor is dry. Later, Lucy notices water near the sink. She tells Ben, and a colleague cleans it up before anyone slips.
Ben also explains how to handle knives. Lucy must choose the right knife for each task and pay attention while she is cutting. Afterwards, she cleans the knife as Ben has shown her and puts it away in the correct place. She must never leave a knife hidden in a sink full of water. Another person could reach into the sink and cut a hand.
During the lunch service, Lucy helps to carry hot dishes. Ben shows her where to find dry oven gloves. He also reminds her to warn people before moving behind them with something hot. This gives her colleagues time to move out of the way. Lucy learns that clear communication is just as important as using the right equipment.
At one point, Ben asks Lucy to use a machine she does not know. She tells him that she needs help. He stops and shows her what to do before she starts. “Asking a question is better than taking a risk,” he says. By the end of the day, Lucy understands that kitchen safety is a team responsibility. Following instructions and speaking up about a problem help everyone work more safely.
